Effect of ultraviolet-A irradiation on the number of melanocytes and the amount of melanin in cultured melanocytes

Abstract
This study was performed to obtain the basic knowledge about the effect of UVA irradiation on the number of melanocytes and the amount of melanin in cultured human melanocytes.
The subcultures of melanocytes were performed on the 2nd and 10th day after UVA irradiation varing between 1J/§², to 4J/§².
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. There was no changes in melanocytes proliferation after UVA irradiation.
2. On the 2nd day of cultivation after UVA irradiation, the amount of melanin was increased in proportional to the increment of dosage of UVA irradiation. After applying the irradiation level of 4J/§²,. The reading was 3.79¡¿10E-4§¶/cell, and
was
found
to be 3.11 times larger than that of a non-irradiated group.
3. On the 10th day of cultivation after UVA irradiated. The amount of melanin was slightly influenced according to the increment of dosage of UVA irradiation. After irradiation level of 4J/cm2, it was 1.60¡¿10E-6§¶/cell, and was found to be 1.33
times
larger than that of a non-irradiated group.
4. After UVA irradiation, the amount of melanin of the 2nd day of subcultiation was larger than that of the 10th day.
From this data, its could be considered that UVA irradiation is capable of directly stimulating melanogensis, however melanocytes proliferation is not influenced at all by UNA irradiation.
